The Harlan’s Creek VFW Hall blood drive broke its own attendance record Saturday. Officials are crediting community spirit. Witnesses are crediting something else.

HARLAN’S CREEK, WV — The Saturday blood drive at VFW Post 441 on Sutter Road recorded its highest single-day donor turnout in the event’s twenty-two year history, with 214 individuals donating across a six-hour window. The Red Cross regional coordinator has submitted the attendance figures to the district office accompanied by no additional comment. The district office has acknowledged receipt.

Organiser and three-term VFW hospitality chair Phyllis Brant confirmed the numbers are accurate and described the event as ‘a real showing of community.’ When asked whether anything about the day had been unusual, Brant said she thought the refreshment table had run low on orange juice faster than expected and that she had ordered more for next year. She did not elaborate on why she had specified next year rather than next time. The blood drive is held twice annually.

Several donors reported that the individual made no attempt to donate blood himself, did not consume any of the refreshments, and did not speak to staff or other attendees. He was, in the words of nurse volunteer Deb Corcoran, ‘extremely well-behaved, which I kept noticing, which I didn’t love that I kept noticing.’ Corcoran processed eleven donors between 2pm and 3pm, her highest hourly total in eight years of volunteering. She attributes this to good flow management. She has submitted no other explanation.

Sheriff Linda Calhoun confirmed her office received two calls during the event from individuals requesting guidance on whether the presence of the figure constituted a reason to leave. Calhoun said her office advised both callers that no laws appeared to be being broken and that if they had already completed the donation process they were free to go. Both callers had, at the time of their calls, already given blood. Sheriff Calhoun noted this without further comment. Her office has filed the incident under Form DCA-9 Local Law Enforcement Supplement. She described the paperwork as straightforward.

Barry Hutchins, 62, retired, told this network he recognised the individual immediately as a Type IV Carpathian Revenant operating under what he described as a ‘civic engagement protocol,’ and that its presence at a blood drive rather than a private residence represented, in his assessment, ‘real personal growth.’ The DCA has processed Hutchins’ account. His file now runs to forty-one pages. Regional office has not actioned any of them. They continue to arrive.

Sandra Okafor, school administrator, attended the blood drive and donated at 1:45pm. She described the event as well-organised and said she appreciated that the chairs were comfortable. She was photographed near the refreshment table at 2:10pm. The figure is visible in the photograph, standing approximately four feet behind her left shoulder. Okafor has been shown the photograph. She has identified herself, the refreshment table, and the orange juice. She has not identified the figure. She said she did not recall anyone standing there. The DCA has flagged this response as consistent with previous Okafor documentation and has not elaborated on what that means.

The Red Cross has confirmed the Harlan’s Creek donation total will contribute to regional supply figures and expressed hope that Saturday’s turnout reflects a broader trend toward community health engagement. A spokesperson said the organisation is always grateful for strong local participation and looks forward to the next event.
