Threat Level: MODERATE (Moderate — winged, sharp-beaked, and apparently patient)
Four witnesses watched a legendary cryptid circle the historic district for eleven minutes while one local man focused on what he called ‘a genuinely tricky spot’
At approximately 2:17 PM on Thursday, a Snallygaster — the multi-tentacled, steel-beaked flying terror of Maryland and West Virginia folklore — completed eleven full low-altitude circles over the historic district of Harpers Ferry while Dennis Prout, 54, of Bolivar, finished parallel parking his 2019 Ford Ranger on Shenandoah Street. He got it on the fourth try. The creature left without incident. Prout did not receive a ticket.
Eleven Minutes, Four Witnesses, One Very Focused Driver
According to four witnesses positioned along the street and the adjacent overlook, the creature first appeared from the direction of the Potomac, flying low enough that one witness, retired schoolteacher Marguerite Foltz, described being able to see ‘something wet and reflective where a face should have been.’ It banked left at the old armory site, made a wide pass over the lower town, and then just… held a pattern. For eleven minutes. Witnesses say it showed no particular aggression — no diving, no vocalizations, no snatching of tourists. It circled. They watched. Dennis Prout cut his wheel and straightened out and cut his wheel again.
I knew something was happening behind me. I could hear people making noise. But I had a Ranger in a compact-sized spot and I was not going to tap that Subaru again. I got out, it was gone. People were very worked up.
— Dennis Prout, Bolivar resident and parallel parking finisher
The other three witnesses — Foltz; a day-hiker from Fredericksburg who declined to give his name but gave me a very detailed sketch on a napkin; and a National Park Service volunteer named Carl Demby — all independently confirmed the eleven-minute window. Demby, who has worked the Harpers Ferry site for six years and describes himself as ‘professionally skeptical of everything,’ said this was the first time he had ever considered filing a cryptid-adjacent incident report. ‘It had a wingspan,’ he told me, in the specific tone of a man who knows that sentence is not sufficient but has no better sentence available.
It had a wingspan.

FIELD ALERT
WTC advises visitors to the Harpers Ferry historic district to remain aware of low-altitude airspace. The Snallygaster’s eleven-minute loiter time without hostile action is notable but not a guarantee of future restraint. If you are parallel parking: finish. Staying half-in and half-out of a spot is not a tactical advantage against a creature with steel beak capabilities.
What Was It Doing Up There?
This is the question I cannot answer, and I want to be straight with you about that. Eleven minutes of circling behavior over a populated historic site with no attack, no landing, no vocalization, and no apparent territorial claim is not standard Snallygaster operating procedure as documented in either the historical record or our own WTC case files. The creature has been associated with this stretch of the Potomac going back to the early 1900s — the old Smithsonian panic, the Frederick News reports — but those accounts describe ambush behavior, livestock concerns, the usual. Not eleven leisurely loops over a gift shop district on a Thursday afternoon.
Foltz, who watched the entire event from the overlook with her hands shading her eyes, offered the most complete description: large body, dark coloration, appendages that ‘hung wrong’ during the glide, and a sound she compared to ‘a very large flag in high wind, but from inside your chest.’ She was remarkably composed about it. She said she teaches sixth grade and that this ranked about a seven out of ten on her personal scale of upsetting Thursdays. I have been covering cryptid events for four years and I found that both humbling and deeply informative about the state of public education.

Prout, for his part, has been gracious with the attention. He told me he’s not embarrassed. ‘Parking on Shenandoah is hard,’ he said. ‘Everyone in Harpers Ferry knows parking on Shenandoah is hard. I’m not going to apologize for doing the thing right.’ He also said he would look up next time, if there is a next time, ‘once I’m fully in the spot.’ I told him that seemed reasonable. I meant it. You can watch the sky for cryptids or you can not hit the Subaru. Sometimes those are your two options and you have to pick one.
One eye. Metal beak. Probably not migrating.
