Both entities arrive without invitation and leave without explanation. Beyond this, the Poltergeist and the Banshee have remarkably little in common, which makes the present comparison both instructive and, from a methodological standpoint, faintly absurd.

The Poltergeist operates globally, with no apparent agenda beyond inconvenience. The Banshee operates regionally, with a single, precisely defined agenda it executes with considerable professionalism. Comparing them is a little like comparing a fox in a kitchen to a scheduled train service — one is chaos, the other is a timetable, and both will ruin your evening.

A moderate threat that acts is categorically more threatening than a moderate threat that merely forecasts.

Poltergeist ◆ Winner

No government has formally acknowledged the Banshee either, though the Irish Folklore Commission documented Banshee accounts extensively through the mid-twentieth century in a manner that a generous analyst might describe as semi-official.

Poltergeist

Across the categories assessed, the Poltergeist demonstrates a consistent operational advantage rooted in its global distribution, physical evidence generation, and habitat indifference. It is the more documentable, more geographically relevant, and — in any practical sense — more present entity. It scores well not because it is particularly remarkable in any single dimension, but because it refuses to be categorically ruled out in any of them.

The Banshee, by contrast, is a specialist — extraordinarily precise in its function, deeply embedded in a specific cultural and genealogical context, and essentially useless by every metric that does not involve knowing someone is about to die. That it performs its single function with apparent reliability and considerable antiquity is noted. It is simply not the more capable entity across the breadth of criteria under review.

I would note for the record that treating ‘reported odour’ as a scoring category in the assessment of a death herald is the kind of methodological choice that would not survive peer review, and I am not entirely comfortable having my name on it.
