Opinion: My Neighbour Is A Werewolf And His Lawn Still Looks Better Than Mine

A Sheboygan man has spent eleven months documenting lycanthropic behaviour next door. His primary grievance is horticultural.

I want to be careful here, because this is an opinion piece and I am going to give you my opinion, and my opinion is that Dennis Garreth of Wakefield Lane, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is a werewolf. I want to be equally clear that this is not the part that troubles me most. I have been covering cryptid phenomena for eleven years. I have sat in diners across six states with people who have seen things that genuinely rearranged how they understood the world, and I have learned to hold those accounts with a kind of steady, professional respect. What I have not previously encountered is a witness who buried the lead so completely that it took me forty minutes of intake interview before I understood that the actual story — the thing this man called me about — was the lawn.

The witness is Gary Polzin, fifty-four, a retired supply-chain coordinator who has lived next door to Dennis Garreth for going on twelve years. He contacted WTC through our tip line in October, and his initial message was, I will admit, not our most compelling submission. The subject line was ‘Neighbor Situation / Possibly Paranormal.’ The body of the email contained three paragraphs about crabgrass management and one sentence, buried at the end, reading: ‘Also I think he may transform into a large wolf-type animal on certain nights which I have documented.’ I nearly filed it. Mara Chen, who reviews the queue when I’m in the field, flagged it with a note that said simply: ‘Sheboygan. Eleven months of notes. Call him.’ I called him.

Eleven Months. Four Witnesses. One Immaculate Quarter-Acre.

Gary Polzin is not a man given to exaggeration, and he is not, as best I can determine after two in-person interviews and a site visit conducted from the pavement, wrong about the lawn. Dennis Garreth’s property is, by any reasonable assessment, exceptional. The edging alone — the clean, blade-precise line where turf meets concrete — is the kind of thing that suggests either professional intervention or an almost devotional relationship with a half-moon edger. Gary has photographed it across four seasons. He brought the photographs to our first interview in a manila envelope, organised chronologically, and I sat across from him at his kitchen table with my thermos of coffee going cold beside me and looked at forty-seven images of a neighbour’s yard. The grass is, in Gary’s words, ‘consistently, almost offensively even.’ It is. I checked.

The difficult weeks — that’s what I started calling them. Full moon, or close to it. He looks rough on a Friday. By Sunday he’s out there at seven in the morning with the aerator like nothing happened. And the yard just — it keeps going. It doesn’t care what he’s been through. It just keeps being perfect.

— Gary Polzin, witness, Sheboygan, WI

Gary has three additional witnesses, all neighbours within the immediate block, none of whom Gary has told about his werewolf theory and all of whom he interviewed, without that context, about the lawn. Their accounts are consistent. Linda Hartwell, sixty-one, describes Dennis Garreth as ‘the kind of person who makes you feel like you should be trying harder,’ which is, in my experience, a phrase people use when they cannot articulate something that is nonetheless true. Tom Szczepanski, across the street, told Gary, and Gary told me, that he resodded his own front yard last spring partly because of ‘the Garreth effect,’ which he defines as a creeping awareness that the bar exists and you are not meeting it. I have noted, and I feel it is relevant to note, that Tom Szczepanski’s yard does not look like Dennis Garreth’s yard. It looks like a yard. Dennis Garreth’s yard looks like an argument.

FIELD ALERT

WTC has not independently confirmed lycanthropic transformation in the subject. We have confirmed the lawn. Site visit conducted November 4th. The edging is real. The edging is, frankly, a lot.

FAST FACTS

• Documented observation period: 11 months, beginning December of last year
• Number of photographed site visits by primary witness: 47
• Estimated square footage of subject property: ~0.25 acres
• Number of times lawn service vehicles observed on premises: 0
• Number of ‘difficult weeks’ cross-referenced with lunar calendar by witness: 9 of 9
• Gary Polzin’s own lawn, assessed on site visit: Fine. It’s fine.

I’m not saying it’s connected. I’m saying I’ve watched him come home looking like he’s been through something, and I’ve watched him be out there the next morning with the leaf blower, and the yard is just — it doesn’t show anything. Whatever he goes through, the yard doesn’t show it. I find that upsetting.

— Gary Polzin, witness, Sheboygan, WI

I want to address the werewolf component, because I recognise that this publication has a responsibility to the phenomenon itself, not only to the horticultural dimensions of its apparent consequences. Gary’s evidence for transformation is, by the standards of the field, circumstantial but not dismissible. He documents extended absences on or near full moons. He notes that Dennis Garreth’s physical appearance on the days following those absences suggests significant physiological stress — pale, moving carefully, reluctant to make eye contact — followed by rapid recovery. He has on two occasions observed what he describes as ‘scratch marks, like claw marks, on the side of the Garreth house, low down, near the foundation.’ He photographed these. They are in the envelope with the lawn photos, filed separately, and labeled in Gary’s handwriting: ‘Possibly relevant / possibly not.’ I have not yet submitted the photographs for analysis. I am giving the context time to develop.

Here is where I land, and I want to be honest with you because that is the only thing I know how to be in this work: I do not know what Dennis Garreth is. Gary Polzin has been a careful, consistent observer for nearly a year, and his documentation is thorough in a way that most witnesses’ accounts are not, and I take that seriously. What I also take seriously is that Gary called this tip line not, I think, because he was frightened of his neighbour, but because he needed someone to acknowledge what he’s been sitting with — not the transformation, not the scratches on the foundation, but the particular quiet indignity of watching something extraordinary maintain a perfect lawn through its worst nights while the rest of us can barely keep ahead of the weeds. That’s a real thing. That’s worth writing down. Ruth Calloway used to say that people come to you with the story they can tell, and the story they need to tell is usually somewhere underneath it. I keep that in mind. I kept it in mind in Gary Polzin’s kitchen, looking at forty-seven photographs of a yard I have now seen in person and which is, I will say it plainly, better than mine.
