Doris Frampton of Baton Rouge says the three-foot amphibious entity that climbed out of her koi pond last Thursday wasn’t just trespassing — it was judging her wind chimes, and it seemed to reach a conclusion.

BATON ROUGE, LA — Doris Frampton, 61, a retired dental hygienist and longtime koi enthusiast, is not interested in your raccoon theory. She has heard the raccoon theory. She considered the raccoon theory, briefly, in the first ten seconds of last Thursday’s encounter, and then she watched the creature slowly rotate its head toward her wind chimes in what she describes as ‘a thoughtful way, like it had been thinking about wind chimes for a long time and finally found one that disappointed it.’ At that point, she says, she abandoned the raccoon theory entirely.

The entity in question reportedly emerged from the shallow end of Frampton’s backyard koi pond at approximately 8:40 p.m., during what she describes as ‘the good part of the evening, right before the mosquitoes get serious.’ It stood — and she is firm on this word, stood — at roughly three feet in height, was dark in coloration with what she called ‘a wet sheen that was not the regular kind of wet,’ and possessed limbs that she says were ‘too considered’ to belong to any local wildlife she has encountered in thirty-two years of Baton Rouge residency. It regarded the wind chimes for several minutes. Then it returned to the water. There was no splash. Frampton found this detail upsetting.

It wasn’t afraid of the chimes. It wasn’t curious about them either. It looked at them the way I look at a painting I don’t understand but suspect is bad. That is not a raccoon behavior. That is a critical faculty.

Eight Witnesses, Zero Raccoon Supporters

Frampton was not alone. She had been hosting a Thursday-evening porch gathering — a rotating group of neighbors and friends she calls, with no apparent irony, the Porch Collective — when the creature emerged. Of the eight individuals present, six reported seeing the entity clearly, one reported seeing ‘something,’ and one, a Mr. Gerald Tuite, 74, reports he had gone inside to refresh his iced tea and therefore declines to be counted among witnesses but also, notably, declines to endorse the raccoon hypothesis. ‘I’ve seen raccoons do a lot of things,’ Tuite told WTC from his own porch, two doors down. ‘I have not seen one contemplate anything. There’s a difference.’

⚠️

FIELD ALERT

WTC investigators note that Frampton’s koi pond is fed by a drainage culvert that connects, via a series of aging municipal pipes, to a tributary of the Amite River. Entities using this waterway as an access corridor would have a potential range of over 40 miles without surface exposure. We are not saying something is moving through the pipes beneath Baton Rouge. We are saying we cannot rule it out and we want you to think about it.

WTC dispatched field investigator Ronnie Aucoin to the Frampton property on Saturday, where he conducted a site assessment and retrieved water samples from the pond for analysis. Aucoin describes the koi as ‘visibly subdued’ and notes that one of them, a large orange specimen Frampton calls Ambassador, has not eaten since Thursday and spends the majority of his time motionless near the drain intake. ‘Ambassador knows something,’ Aucoin told me by phone. ‘I’m not qualified to say what. But he knows it.’ Aucoin also confirmed that the wind chimes — a copper-and-bamboo set purchased at a Shreveport gift shop in 2019 — showed no physical damage but were, in his words, ‘hung weird, like someone had considered moving them and then decided against it on principle.’

I’ve investigated sixty-one sightings in Louisiana. Nutria, gator, mystery canine, one very large owl someone called a harbinger. I have never had a witness use the word ‘opinions’ before. That’s new. I wrote it down in a different-colored ink.

FAST FACTS

• Frampton’s koi pond is approximately 8 feet by 12 feet and 3.5 feet deep at center — sufficient to conceal an entity of the reported dimensions indefinitely
• The creature’s total surface time is estimated at 6–9 minutes; zero of those minutes were spent interacting with the koi, the porch guests, or the property itself — only the wind chimes
• Baton Rouge municipal records confirm the drainage culvert adjacent to the Frampton property was last inspected in 2019 and noted as ‘passable’ — a word that now feels like it needs a second look
• Of the six clear witnesses, four used the word ‘deliberate’ unprompted when asked to describe the creature’s movements
• Ambassador the koi remains in a state WTC is formally classifying as Existential Distress

Frampton says she has no intention of filling in the pond, rehoming the koi, or removing the wind chimes. ‘If it comes back,’ she told me, sitting in the same chair she occupied on Thursday, facing the same copper-and-bamboo chimes, ‘I want it to know I held my ground. And I want it to know I’ve thought about the wind chimes too, and I stand by them.’ She paused. ‘I just want to understand what it didn’t like.’ So do we, Doris. So do we. WTC will continue to monitor this situation and update readers as Ambassador’s condition changes. Threat level remains HIGH — not because we believe Frampton is in danger, but because anything with aesthetic grievances and reliable aquatic access is, categorically speaking, a concern.
