Hal Ridgeway, Lead Anchor
Week of 13–15 August 2026

This was a week about jurisdiction. Not in the legal sense, though that was present. In the older sense: who is responsible for a thing, and whether anyone is willing to say so out loud. We covered thirteen stories across three days. Across those thirteen stories, the answer was, with one partial exception, no.

We began Thursday with practical matters. Evelyn Crowe filed a guide on how to ask a djinn to stop cooperating in a way that has become the problem. The same day, Malcolm Shaw brought us the account of Patricia Crowe — no relation, as far as we have been able to determine — who received three wishes from a djinn in her kitchen and used all three to repair a garbage disposal. She reports no regrets. The disposal works. I want to note, for the record, that these two pieces together represent something WTC covers more frequently than I think our readership fully appreciates: the gap between what an entity is technically doing and what anyone wanted it to do. That gap is where most of our stories live.

Also on Thursday: Penny Hart reported that a chupacabra in rural New Mexico has begun selecting only organically certified livestock. The cryptid community has noted this with interest. Farmers are noting it differently. Rico Valez filed on a Momo encounter in the Ozarks — eleven minutes, no aggression, and a departure that one experienced hiker described as patient in a tone that communicated she wished she could have said something worse. Patience, in these encounters, is not a comfort. It is a data point.

Mara Vane continued her work on the Goatman file, which has survived three departmental headings, two archive rooms, and a case number the county system will not acknowledge. This is not unusual. The file will be where it is. The Goatman will be where it is. These are separate facts that will eventually require the same conversation.

I filed two pieces this week. The Bunyip outside Broken Hill, occupying a nearly waterless billabong and communicating, through guttural honks, that it arrived before the surveyors did. Council has no current response to this. I reported it as submitted. The second was the zombie at 14 Millbrook Close, where Patricia Ruane has filed two HOA complaints and received zero responses. The zombie has filed nothing. It remains. I will say only that the HOA’s silence is, in this instance, a choice with ongoing consequences.

Saturday brought volume. Daryl’s report from the Nullarbor Plain — thirty-one witnesses, a Sheepsquatch, and a government sample-retention hotline that does not connect to anyone — is one of the more thorough field submissions we have received this quarter. Mara Vane reported that the Department of Transportation has completed a route analysis of the Headless Horseman’s path and has asked, at some length, that the map not be distributed. The map exists. Penny Hart covered a Devon beekeeper’s third pixie-interference claim under insurance Policy Exclusion Clause 14(f). We assessed it as credible. We noted our assessment in the coverage. Evelyn Crowe closed the week with a guide to managing a social group that includes the Whore of Babylon, which she approached with the same practical register she brings to the djinn piece. This is the correct register.

And somewhere in Harlan’s Creek, West Virginia, a fourteen-inch bipedal footprint has cured permanently into new pavement outside the recreation centre. The Paving and Grounds Subcommittee has been convened. Opinions differ. The print does not.

Thirteen stories. Thirteen separate instances of something happening that someone, somewhere, is now responsible for addressing. The week’s question was not what these things are. The week’s question was whose desk it lands on when they do.

In most cases, that desk remains unoccupied.

This is Hal Ridgeway. Authorities continue to urge caution. Reporting continues.
