Maya Cordero, 14, stands by her account. Her parents stand by their follow-up questions. Neither party is making progress.

At approximately 8:40 PM on Tuesday, Maya Cordero stepped out the front door of 14 Briarwood Court to retrieve a forgotten jacket from her mother’s car and returned without the jacket. What she returned with was an account involving the color scarlet, a large animal that she describes as ‘not a horse but horse-adjacent,’ and what she estimates as ‘a lot of cups’ — a detail she has since declined to quantify further on the grounds that quantifying it would require her to explain where the cups were, and she is not prepared to do that.

The Cordero household has now logged seven distinct requests for clarification from Maya’s parents, David and Renata, covering the animal’s approximate size, the number of cups, whether the cups were full, what they were full of, whether any neighbors were present, whether Maya had her phone, and — asked separately by each parent within four minutes of each other — whether she was certain about the scarlet. Maya has answered none of these to anyone’s satisfaction, including her own. She maintains that she is certain about the scarlet. She is less certain about everything else, and she would like everyone to understand that this is not the same as being wrong.

Fix it before it fixes you

I know what I saw. I don’t know what it means. Those are two different problems and everyone keeps treating them like they’re the same problem.

— Maya Cordero, 14, witness

WTC has covered the Whore of Babylon in previous cycles — the entity is documented, the descriptions are consistent across centuries, and the cups are always a feature. That last point is the one that gives this report its thread of credibility. Maya did not know about the cups before Tuesday. She has since been informed that the cups are a known element of the encounter profile, which she describes as ‘not making this better.’ Two additional witnesses — a Mrs. Farouk from number 11 and a dog-walker who declined to give his name but agreed to be described as ‘shaken’ — corroborate the scarlet and the animal, respectively. Neither witnessed the cups. This is consistent with how cups are typically reported in this category of sighting: one witness, seen clearly, remembered reluctantly.

The jacket, for what it’s worth, was still on the passenger seat Wednesday morning. David Cordero retrieved it. He did not look toward the cul-de-sac when he did. He has not said why. Briarwood Court is a standard residential loop, seventeen homes, two speed bumps, a dogwood that the HOA has been arguing about for three years. It was, until Tuesday, not a location we had on file. It is now. We are recommending residents in the immediate area take note of unusual light sources and avoid leaving cups — full or otherwise — unattended outdoors after dark. This is precautionary. It is also, in our experience, the kind of precaution that turns out to have been warranted.
