Goblin Activity Near Cotswold B&B; Owner Disputes Tripadvisor Review

A three-star rating and a formal platform dispute are now the most documented aspects of what may be a genuine Common Goblin incursion in Gloucestershire.

A bed and breakfast in the Cotswolds is at the centre of a dispute that is, depending on how you look at it, either a consumer review disagreement or the first formally contested goblin sighting filed through a hospitality platform. The property, Wisteria Hollow in Chipping Campden, received a three-star TripAdvisor review from a guest identified only as DuncanT_Travels, who described, among other complaints about the mattress firmness, quote, small figures moving in the garden after midnight and a persistent scratching on the exterior wall near the window. The owner, Margaret Elspeth Crane, seventy-one, has submitted a formal dispute to TripAdvisor arguing that those specific observations fall outside the platform’s standard hospitality assessment criteria, and that a three-star rating is not an appropriate metric for a goblin event.

I want to be clear about what is happening here. Fifteen witnesses, including eight other guests across the property’s four rooms, two members of staff, and Mrs Crane herself, have provided accounts of activity in the garden across three consecutive nights in late October. The accounts are consistent in their description of size, movement pattern, and the scratching. What is being disputed is not whether something happened. What is being disputed is whether TripAdvisor is the correct venue in which to record it. I find that a reasonable position. The radio on my desk has been running slightly lower in pitch since this story came in, which I note without interpretation.

The Review, the Dispute, and the Platform’s Response

TripAdvisor’s response to Mrs Crane’s dispute was, according to documents she provided to WTC, that the review did not violate community guidelines and reflected the guest’s personal experience. Mrs Crane’s reply to that response was four pages long and included a hand-drawn map of the garden with incident markers. She has since escalated to what she describes as the next level, which she acknowledges she is still identifying. WTC has reached out to TripAdvisor for comment. We have not received one. We did not expect to receive one before broadcast.

I have run this property for nineteen years. I know what a fox looks like. I know what a badger looks like. I know what a guest who has had too much local cider looks like. This was none of those things. You cannot leave a three-star review for something that was not a hospitality failure. The mattress is perfectly adequate.

FAST FACTS

• Location: Wisteria Hollow B&B, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire
• Witnesses: 15, across three nights in late October
• Review rating in dispute: Three stars out of five
• Platform: TripAdvisor
• Classification of activity: Consistent with Common Goblin — small figures, nocturnal movement, exterior surface scratching
• Mrs Crane’s dispute status: Ongoing. Escalation level: TBD.

Field classification of the garden activity is preliminary but consistent with what our cryptid catalogue lists as Common Goblin behaviour — nocturnal perimeter testing, surface scratching along structural seams, small-group movement in low visibility conditions. The Common Goblin is not, by our assessment, a high-threat classification. It does not preclude a good night’s sleep, in most documented cases. It does, however, tend to be persistent once a location registers as interesting, and Wisteria Hollow has, by all accounts, now registered.

I’m not saying it ruined the holiday. The scones were excellent. I’m saying that what I saw at two in the morning was not foxes, and I said so in the review, and I think that’s fair comment.

⚠️

FIELD ALERT

If you are currently booked at a rural Cotswold property and have noticed small figures, repeated scratching along exterior walls, or an unusual interest in your garden shed: document it, do not approach, and consider whether your review, if you choose to leave one, should be filed with WTC in addition to any hospitality platform. We are not TripAdvisor. We do not give stars. We do take notes.

Mrs Crane has stated she intends to keep the property open. She has also purchased additional exterior lighting and what she describes as some things recommended by a woman in the village who knows about this sort of thing. She declined to be more specific. I respect that. I made my coffee this morning before writing this script and the percolator ran without issue, which remains, at sixteen years and counting, something I consider worth mentioning. The radio is still low. The story is ongoing. WTC will update as developments warrant.
