A practical guide to group chats, shared dinner reservations, and the specific social difficulty of being the one who noticed first and said nothing for eleven months.

You noticed something in October. You didn’t say anything in October because it was Priya’s birthday month and the group was already managing the seating arrangement fallout from June, and you told yourself you’d bring it up in November when things had settled. Then it was November and the signs had intensified but so had the holiday coordination thread, and then it was September again — the following September — and you were standing in the car park of Oleander Wine Bar watching her arrive forty minutes late in a car that left no exhaust despite being visibly running, wearing the same dress she’d worn to three separate events in three separate cities on the same calendar weekend, and you thought: right. There it is. I am going to have to say something now, probably, at some point, about the Whore of Babylon being in our friend group.

This is, in my experience, one of the more socially complex situations a person can find themselves in — and I use the word ‘experience’ with the full weight of what that implies. It ranks above ‘I think my neighbour’s extension may have incorporated a liminal space without planning permission’ and somewhat below ‘the entity in the cellar has begun leaving correspondence.’ It is difficult not because the evidence is ambiguous. The evidence, once you know what you are looking at, is rarely ambiguous. It is difficult because you have a history. There are photographs. You have inside jokes about a trip to Quebec in 2019. These things do not become nothing simply because one party has been confirmed as a harbinger of civilisational dissolution.

The Eleven-Month Problem

Fourteen witnesses came forward in the course of my research for this piece — all from separate friend groups, all reporting the same foundational difficulty: they had noticed, and then they had said nothing, and then they had continued saying nothing across a span of time that ranged from four months to, in one case, three years during which she had served as maid of honour at a wedding. The delay is not cowardice, though it may look like it from the outside. It is, more precisely, the entirely human hope that you are wrong, followed by the entirely human recognition that you are not, followed by the paralysing question of what exactly you are supposed to do with that information at nine-thirty on a Tuesday night when the group chat is discussing where to eat for Marcus’s birthday.

She was always the one who remembered everyone’s coffee order. You don’t just — I don’t know how you factor that in. She remembered that I take oat milk. That has to mean something, doesn’t it? I kept thinking it had to mean something.

⚠️

FIELD ALERT

If your friend has attended three separate events in three separate cities on the same calendar weekend, this is not a scheduling error and it is not something the airline can explain. Cross-reference against the full WTC catalogue entry before your next group dinner. The Whore of Babylon profile is flagged Extreme for a reason, and that reason is not metaphorical.

What You Actually Do

The first thing — and I want to be clear that I am speaking practically, not philosophically — is to stop treating the eleven months of silence as a character failing that now prevents you from speaking. It doesn’t. You can still say something. You say: I need to talk to you about something I’ve been sitting with for a while. You do not say it over text. You do not say it in the group chat. You do not allow the conversation to happen at a restaurant table with six other people and a shared charcuterie board. You say it in person, in daylight if you can manage it, and you leave the cloth bag in your left pocket where it belongs and you do not draw attention to it. The bag is yours. It is not a prop in her story.

What you say after that is your decision, and I won’t pretend otherwise. Some of the fourteen witnesses had already had the conversation by the time they contacted me. The outcomes varied — as outcomes do, when you are dealing with something that has been around, in various incarnations, considerably longer than your friendship group. Three witnesses reported that she denied everything calmly and the friendship continued unchanged, which is its own category of problem that we will return to in a follow-up piece. Two reported that she confirmed it, which was in some ways easier to work with. The remaining nine are still in the group chat. The dinner reservations are still being made. Priya’s birthday is coming up again in October.

I think the thing that bothered me most was that she was right about the Quebec restaurant. It was excellent. Her taste is impeccable. I don’t know what to do with that either.

FAST FACTS

• Witnesses interviewed for this piece: 14
• Average length of pre-disclosure silence: 11.3 months

• Number of shared group chats currently still active: 11
• Longest active friendship with a confirmed or suspected Whore of Babylon: 6 years, 4 months (Quebec trip inclusive)

I will say one final thing, because I think it is the thing people most need to hear and the thing that is hardest to find written down plainly anywhere: knowing does not automatically tell you what to do next. This is true of most things in this field, and it is especially true of this one. The knowledge is real. The friendship is also real. Both of these things can be true simultaneously, and you are not required to resolve that immediately. What you are required to do — what I would recommend, professionally and otherwise — is to stop pretending you don’t know. The eleven months are over. You are the one who noticed first. That is yours to carry, but you don’t have to carry it in silence going forward. October is coming. Start with October.
