Overview

The Undead, commonly referred to as zombies, represent humanity’s most persistent nightmare made manifest: deceased human beings who have somehow retained the ability to ambulate while displaying an overwhelming compulsion to consume living human flesh. These entities exhibit complete loss of higher cognitive function while maintaining basic motor skills and an inexplicable ability to detect living targets across considerable distances.

Classified as undead predators, The Undead demonstrate remarkable resilience to physical trauma that would incapacitate living organisms. Their danger level registers at 9 out of 10, with the primary threat being their tendency to create additional undead through bite transmission. Current global population estimates remain classified, though field reports suggest exponential growth patterns in affected regions.

History & Mythology

Historical accounts of reanimated corpses span virtually every human culture, with the earliest documented cases appearing in Mesopotamian texts circa 2100 BCE. The modern understanding of zombification derives primarily from Haitian Vodou traditions, where the term ‘zombi’ originally described individuals enslaved through supernatural means rather than the flesh-consuming variants now prevalent.

The first scientifically verified outbreak occurred in rural Haiti in 1929, documented by ethnobotanist Dr. Wade Davis. His research identified tetrodotoxin-based compounds used by Vodou priests to induce death-like states, though this explains only the initial paralysis phase and not the subsequent carnivorous reanimation. The disconnect between traditional zombification and modern flesh-eating variants suggests either an evolution in methodology or the emergence of an entirely different phenomenon.

Global incident reports have increased exponentially since 1968, coinciding suspiciously with the release of George Romero’s documentary film ‘Night of the Living Dead.’ Whether this represents improved reporting mechanisms or actual proliferation remains hotly debated within the cryptozoological community.

Physical Description

The Undead retain the basic humanoid structure of their pre-death state while exhibiting varying degrees of decomposition. Fresh specimens appear remarkably similar to living humans aside from distinctly pallid complexion and notably vacant stare. Pupil dilation appears permanently fixed, with iris coloration often shifting to milky white or pale yellow within 72 hours of reanimation.

Decomposition rates vary significantly based on environmental factors and time since initial death. Advanced specimens display exposed bone, missing appendages, and severe tissue degradation while somehow maintaining locomotive function. Height and build correspond to the original individual, though posture typically becomes increasingly hunched as rigor mortis sets in permanently.

Distinguishing features include a characteristic shambling gait, caused by deteriorating motor control and joint stiffness. Vocalizations are limited to low moaning sounds, though some specimens demonstrate surprising lung capacity for such emissions. Clothing remains from the time of death, though rapidly deteriorates alongside the host body.

Behaviour & Temperament

The Undead exhibit remarkably simple behavioral patterns centered entirely around locating and consuming living human flesh. They demonstrate basic problem-solving abilities, capable of opening doors, climbing stairs, and navigating around obstacles, though complex tasks appear beyond their cognitive capacity.

Activity patterns show no correlation with circadian rhythms, suggesting the absence of sleep requirements. Groups tend to form spontaneously when multiple specimens converge on the same target, though this appears coincidental rather than coordinated hunting behavior. Individual specimens show no recognition of former associates or family members.

Aggression levels remain consistently high toward all living humans, with attack patterns following predictable sequences: detection, pursuit, grappling, and biting. Curiously, they show no interest in other undead specimens or non-human animals, suggesting highly specific dietary preferences. Response to threats involves continued advance regardless of physical damage sustained.

Habitat & Territory

The Undead show no preference for specific environments, appearing wherever human populations exist. Urban areas provide optimal conditions due to abundant food sources and numerous hiding places within buildings. Abandoned structures, particularly hospitals, morgues, and cemeteries, often serve as inadvertent congregation points.

Rural areas report lower concentrations, though isolated farmhouses and small communities face higher risk due to limited escape routes and delayed emergency response. Extreme weather conditions appear to have minimal impact on undead mobility, with specimens observed functioning normally in temperatures ranging from -20°F to 120°F.

No evidence suggests territorial behavior or nest-building activities. The Undead appear to wander continuously until detecting potential prey, at which point they pursue relentlessly until either successful feeding occurs or the target escapes their sensory range.

Diet & Hunting

The Undead subsist exclusively on living human flesh, showing particular preference for brain tissue when accessible. Feeding behavior involves using teeth and fingernails to tear through skin and muscle, with consumption continuing until the victim either dies or escapes. Digestive processes remain poorly understood, as specimens show no evidence of waste elimination.

Hunting methodology relies primarily on detection of living humans through unknown sensory mechanisms. Specimens demonstrate ability to locate prey through walls and at distances exceeding normal human sensory capabilities. Once a target is identified, pursuit continues indefinitely without apparent fatigue or need for rest.

Notably, The Undead show complete disinterest in deceased human tissue, animal flesh, or plant matter. Attempts to redirect their attention using alternative food sources have proven universally unsuccessful. This dietary specificity suggests either supernatural compulsion or unknown biochemical requirements unique to the reanimation process.

Notable Sightings

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania · 1968

Multiple witnesses reported groups of reanimated corpses attacking residents near Evans City Cemetery. Local authorities initially attributed reports to mass hysteria until discovering partially consumed bodies matching eyewitness descriptions.

Raccoon City, Colorado · 1998

Umbrella Corporation facility breach resulted in citywide outbreak affecting estimated 100,000 residents. Military containment protocols implemented within 72 hours, though official records remain heavily classified.

London, England · 2004

Winchester Tavern incident involved 29 individuals barricaded against undead mob for 16 hours. Survivors reported excellent jukebox selection provided suitable background music for extended siege warfare.

Atlanta, Georgia · 2010

Highway I-85 shutdown due to massive undead congregation estimated at over 10,000 specimens. CDC response team established safe zone at former prison facility, implementing successful long-term survival protocols.

Threat Assessment

The Undead represent an extreme threat to human survival, with danger levels amplified by their infectious bite transmission and apparent immunity to conventional weapons. Standard firearms prove ineffective unless targeting the brain stem, requiring precise marksmanship under high-stress conditions. Physical confrontation should be avoided at all costs due to infection risk and their apparent immunity to pain or fatigue.

Recommended protocols include immediate evacuation from affected areas, establishment of secure perimeters with multiple escape routes, and stockpiling of essential supplies for extended siege scenarios. Groups of survivors should implement strict quarantine procedures for any individual potentially exposed to undead bodily fluids. Communication with emergency services may prove impossible during widespread outbreaks due to infrastructure collapse.

WTCNN Field Notes

WTCNN maintains the world’s most comprehensive undead tracking database, though our field reporters face obvious occupational hazards when investigating active outbreaks. Our editorial policy requires confirmation from at least three independent sources before declaring any region ‘zombie-free,’ a designation that has proven frustratingly temporary.

Viewers frequently ask why we continue broadcasting during undead emergencies instead of evacuating. The answer remains simple: someone needs to document humanity’s final chapter, and our underground broadcast facility features excellent security systems plus a surprisingly well-stocked cafeteria. Besides, zombies appear completely uninterested in television equipment, making them ideal subjects for close-up cinematography.

Quick Facts

Average walking speed: 0.8 mph (significantly slower than living humans)
Bite transmission rate: 100% fatal within 24-72 hours
Effective kill method: Severe brain trauma or decapitation only
