Carpathian lycanthrope encounters down 73% as one-star reviews citing ‘sloppy dismemberment’ and ‘lack of moonlit ambiance’ drive tourists to safer, less fang-forward destinations.

BRAN, ROMANIA — The Romanian Werewolf Tourism Board held an emergency press conference Tuesday in a drafty castle cellar that absolutely reeked of wet fur and wounded pride, after new data confirmed that lycanthrope-related visitor numbers in the Carpathian Mountains have hit a historic low. According to figures released by the Board, overnight bookings for so-called ‘Howl Holiday’ packages have dropped 73% year-over-year, a collapse that tourism officials are attributing almost entirely to a coordinated wave of scathing TripAdvisor reviews left by survivors — and, in at least three cases, the partially-recovered.

The review bombing appears to have begun in late September when a group of seven tourists from the greater Düsseldorf area completed a guided ‘Full Moon Fright Walk’ through the Retezat National Park. Of the seven witnesses, four filed formal complaints, two disputed charges on their credit cards, and one — a retired actuary named Heinz — began a prolific reviewing career that has since amassed over 40,000 helpful votes on the platform. His three-part series, titled ‘What The Wolf Did To My Anorak,’ currently sits at the top of TripAdvisor’s ‘Most Helpful — Romania’ leaderboard and has been cited in two separate European Parliament briefings on supernatural consumer protections.

The mauling was sloppy. Unfocused. I’ve had dental work with more narrative structure. Two stars — and that second star is for the fog, which was genuinely atmospheric.

The Board Responds: ‘We Cannot Control Every Werewolf’

At the press conference, Romanian Werewolf Tourism Board Director Florin Gabor — a haggard man who has clearly not slept since the Autumn Equinox and possibly not since the last time Romania qualified for a major football tournament — pushed back against what he called ‘an unreasonable expectation of customer service from an entity that is technically cursed.’ Gabor acknowledged that several of the featured lycanthropes had underperformed during the October encounter season, but stressed that the Board cannot ‘micromanage every transformation’ and that visitors should read their liability waivers, which are, he noted, written in three languages and also in claw marks on a pine tree near the car park.

You want professional mauling? Go to the Swiss. We offer authentic mauling. These are different things. One of them has paperwork.

— Florin Gabor, Director, Romanian Werewolf Tourism Board

FIELD ALERT

WTC correspondents on the ground in Bran report that at least two of the local werewolves have now created their own TripAdvisor accounts and are leaving retaliatory one-star reviews of Heinz Bruckmeyer’s personal residence. Platform moderators are ‘looking into the situation,’ which is a sentence I never thought I would type.

The most frequently cited complaints in the negative reviews center on three recurring themes: unprofessional mauling technique, described variously as ‘half-hearted,’ ‘distracted,’ and ‘like he wasn’t really feeling it that night’; poor customer service, including one werewolf who apparently stopped mid-chase to scratch behind his own ear for a full ninety seconds; and a general lack of moonlit ambiance, with multiple tourists noting that the Board’s promotional materials featured a dramatic full moon that was, in reality, obscured by a low cloud ceiling and what one reviewer described as ‘aggressive drizzle.’ The Board has since updated its FAQ to clarify that it ‘does not control the weather, the moon, or Gheorghe.’

FAST FACTS

• 7 witnesses from the Düsseldorf group incident; all survived, though one anorak did not.
• The Carpathian region saw 4,200 lycanthrope-related tourism visits in 2019; this year’s figure stands at approximately 1,134.
• The TripAdvisor page for ‘Full Moon Fright Walk — Retezat Forest’ currently holds a 1.8-star average from 312 reviews, below the 2.1-star rating for the nearby gift shop that only sells wolf-themed refrigerator magnets.
• At least one werewolf, identified in reviews only as ‘the tall one with the asymmetric ears,’ has received a single five-star review, attributed to a user account named ‘DarkLordOfTheNight88.’
• The Romanian government has declined to classify werewolves as ‘service industry workers,’ closing off any avenue for mandatory hospitality training.

For now, the Board says it is exploring ‘reputation rehabilitation strategies,’ which reportedly include a partnership with a Bucharest-based PR firm, a new branded hashtag (#VisitCarpathia #TheMaulingWasLovingly), and a pilot program in which select werewolves will undergo what Gabor diplomatically called ‘attitude recalibration sessions.’ Whether any self-respecting lycanthrope will submit to a branding workshop is, at this point, an open question — one that I, Malcolm Shaw, will be following closely from a safe distance, behind a very thick door, with garlic I bought purely as a precaution and not because I actually believe it works. I believe it works a little. This is WTC News. Stay curious, stay indoors, and for the love of all that is unholy, do not leave a review.
