Overview
The Men in Black represent one of the more administratively frustrating entries in the WTC Cryptid Database, in that the subject matter actively discourages documentation. Typically manifesting as two or three individuals dressed in identical black suits of apparently vintage or poorly-fitted cut, the MIB are most commonly reported in the 24 to 72 hours following a UFO sighting or anomalous aerial encounter. Their stated purpose, on the occasions they state a purpose at all, is to advise witnesses that what they saw was not what they saw — a mandate they pursue with a consistency that WTC researchers find, professionally speaking, concerning.
The entities present as human males, though witness accounts consistently flag minor physiological details that accumulate into a larger question no single account fully answers: the skin too smooth, the blinking too infrequent, the speech patterns slightly off-tempo, as though the words were selected from a list rather than a memory. They carry credentials — federal, military, and occasionally corporate — that subsequent verification invariably fails to confirm. This has not, to date, meaningfully reduced their effectiveness as a deterrent.
WTC classifies the MIB as Extraterrestrial on the balance of available evidence, while acknowledging that a non-trivial number of researchers have proposed government, interdimensional, and tulpa-based origin theories with varying degrees of supporting documentation. The Extraterrestrial classification is our current best assessment. We note, for the record, that three of the four researchers who most vocally disputed this classification have since become difficult to reach.
History & Mythology
The modern MIB phenomenon is conventionally dated to 1947, when Harold Dahl reported that following his alleged sighting of six donut-shaped craft over Maury Island, Washington, a large man in a dark suit arrived at his home the following morning, ate his breakfast without being invited to do so, and advised him in considerable detail that he had not seen what he had seen. The Maury Island incident is contested on multiple grounds, but the breakfast detail appears in Dahl’s original account and was never retracted.
The figure most responsible for codifying MIB encounters as a distinct phenomenon is Albert K. Bender, founder of the International Flying Saucer Bureau, who in 1953 abruptly shut down his organisation and ceased all publication, later citing a visit from three men in black suits who he described as having ‘blazing eyes’ and communicating partially through telepathy. Bender’s account, published a decade later in Flying Saucers and the Three Men, is considered by WTC researchers either foundational or self-referential depending on which WTC researcher you ask. The editorial dispute has been ongoing since 2019.
Pre-1947 cultural antecedents for suited, government-adjacent figures arriving to suppress inconvenient knowledge exist across several traditions — the Scandinavian concept of the ‘black school’ emissary, certain Appalachian folklore figures described as ‘deed men’ arriving after strange lights — though whether these represent genuine historical encounters or retrospective pattern-matching is the kind of question WTC officially declines to adjudicate. Unofficially, our folklore consultant describes the parallels as ‘not nothing.’
Physical Description
Witness descriptions of the MIB achieve a degree of cross-regional consistency that is, given the total absence of coordinated reporting among most witnesses, statistically noteworthy. The suits are invariably black, cut in a style that multiple witnesses have independently described as ‘like the 1950s, but wrong’ — lapels slightly too narrow or too wide, trouser breaks at an unfamiliar height, buttons in non-standard positions. The fabric appears new but not modern, a distinction that is easier to make in person than to explain in a written report, as witnesses repeatedly note.
Height ranges cluster between 5’10” and 6’2″. Build is consistently described as thin to the point of being medically remarkable — estimates of body weight from witnesses with relevant professional backgrounds have ranged from 130 to 145 pounds at those heights, a figure one WTC-consulting endocrinologist described as ‘incompatible with normal metabolic function’ before requesting that her name not be used in this entry. Skin tone is reported as uniformly pale with an occasional slight greyish or yellowish cast. Facial features are regular but somehow, as eleven separate witnesses have used the exact word, ‘assembled.’ Hats — black, brimmed, and worn level — are present in approximately 73% of documented encounters.
The eyes are the most consistently flagged anomaly. Witnesses report irises that are too large, too dark, or too uniformly coloured, with a blink rate several witnesses with ophthalmological backgrounds have estimated at roughly one-third the normal human average. The MIB do not appear to wear sunglasses indoors, despite arriving in vehicles with heavily tinted windows. This detail is in every report. No one has offered a satisfying explanation for it.
Behaviour & Temperament
The MIB operate in pairs or triads and divide conversational labour with a precision that suggests either extensive training or a shared operational framework that functions below the level of spoken coordination. One entity typically takes the lead — asking questions, delivering advisories, making the specific, occasionally impossible-to-verify threats that characterise these encounters — while the second observes. In three-entity encounters, the third has never, across documented cases, spoken at all. Its function, if it has one, is not recorded in any report WTC has been able to access.
Conversationally, the MIB demonstrate familiarity with the witness’s personal history at a level that implies surveillance of some duration — referencing family members by name, recent travel, professional affiliations, and on at least three documented occasions, details that witnesses insist had not been recorded anywhere and could not have been obtained through conventional means. They do not threaten explicitly in the majority of cases; they imply. The distinction appears to be deliberate. Witnesses describe leaving the encounter uncertain whether anything specific had been said, only that something had been communicated very clearly.
One behavioural quirk that appears across enough independent accounts to warrant notation: the MIB display what can only be described as procedural difficulty with ordinary domestic objects. Pens that require clicking before use. Coffee cups that are picked up and set down without being drunk from. Light switches operated with visible, brief hesitation. Whether this represents unfamiliarity with human material culture, a form of performance, or something else entirely is a question WTC has tabled for a later meeting.
Habitat & Territory
The MIB do not, to any documented knowledge, maintain a fixed residence or territorial range in the conventional sense. Their presence is reactive — they arrive at the locations of witnesses rather than inhabiting fixed territories — and their point of origin has never been established despite the fact that they invariably arrive in vehicles: typically large, black, and of American manufacture, most commonly described as resembling 1950s or early 1960s Cadillacs or Lincolns that are, like the suits, in implausible condition for their apparent age.
Geographically, MIB encounters are heavily concentrated in the continental United States, with particular density across the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, and rural New England — a distribution that correlates strongly with high-frequency UFO sighting zones, which is either explanatory or circular depending on your theoretical framework. International encounters are documented but comparatively sparse, with notable clusters in the United Kingdom following the 1980 Rendlesham Forest incident and in Brazil following the 1977 Colares events. WTC maintains that the MIB’s effective habitat is wherever inconvenient witnesses are located, which is technically a global range but feels more targeted than that implies.
Diet & Hunting
No MIB entity has ever been observed eating, with the single exception of Harold Dahl’s 1947 breakfast account, in which the visitor consumed scrambled eggs and toast without apparent enjoyment and did not thank Dahl afterward. No beverage consumption has been reliably documented. In multiple encounters where witnesses have offered water, coffee, or other refreshment as a social gesture, the offer has been declined using language that witnesses describe as technically correct but somehow adjacent to what a human being would actually say — ‘that will not be needed’ being a phrasing that appears in four separate unconnected testimonies.
WTC’s current working hypothesis, endorsed with varying degrees of enthusiasm by our consulting xenobiologist, is that the MIB either do not require caloric intake in any form consistent with human biology, or sustain themselves through means that are not visible during the relatively brief duration of a witness encounter. The Dahl breakfast remains an outlier that the field has not satisfactorily explained. It is possible he was simply hungry.
Notable Sightings
Dr. Herbert Hopkins, a hypnotherapist who had been working with a UFO contactee named David Stephens, reported that an individual identifying himself as a representative of the New Jersey UFO Research Organisation arrived at his home by telephone invitation Hopkins could not recall extending. The visitor, described as completely hairless including eyebrows and eyelashes, wearing a black suit and a lip colour Hopkins described as ‘painted on and fading during the conversation,’ instructed Hopkins to destroy all recordings and notes pertaining to the Stephens case. Hopkins complied before the entity had fully left the driveway. Hopkins later stated he did not know why he had acted so quickly, and that he had not, at any point, felt that he had a choice in the matter. Hopkins destroyed the recordings, ceased working with Stephens, and did not discuss the encounter publicly for nearly a decade.
UFO researcher Peter Rojcewicz reported that while working alone in the University of Pennsylvania folklore library, a tall thin man in a black suit sat across from him unbidden and engaged him in a conversation about flying saucers that Rojcewicz described as ‘off in a way I couldn’t place but couldn’t stop thinking about.’ The man expressed apparent unfamiliarity with the concept of UFO research as a field, asked Rojcewicz what he personally believed, became briefly agitated when Rojcewicz said he was not sure he believed in extraterrestrials, and then departed. When Rojcewicz looked up minutes later, the man was gone — notable because the library’s single exit was within his sightline throughout the conversation. Rojcewicz went on to complete his doctorate in folklore with a focus on anomalous visitation traditions, a career trajectory he describes as not unrelated to this event.
A family of four reported two men in black suits arriving the morning after the eldest daughter, age seventeen, photographed an unidentified craft over the Susquehanna River. The visitors knew the daughter’s name, her school, and the specific camera model used, a detail that the family’s father — a former law enforcement officer — confirmed was not publicly available information and would have required either prior surveillance or access to purchase records. The film was requested and surrendered. The daughter later told investigators that one of the men had ‘forgotten to blink for the last part of the conversation,’ a detail she reported noticing but not mentioning at the time because she felt it would have been impolite to bring up. The family relocated to a different county the following year.
James and Kathleen McAllister, who had reported multiple UFO sightings to local newspapers as part of what became known as the Falkirk Triangle phenomenon, reported a visit from two men in dark suits identifying themselves as representatives of ‘European aerospace administration,’ a body that no aviation authority in the UK, EU, or associated international body has been able to confirm exists. The men spoke with American accents. They advised the McAllisters to ‘reduce their public profile on this matter,’ stayed for eleven minutes by James McAllister’s kitchen clock, and departed in a black vehicle that a neighbour confirmed had no visible number plate. The McAllisters continued reporting sightings to local press. The men did not return, which James McAllister described in a subsequent interview as ‘either reassuring or the part I should be most worried about.’
Threat Assessment
WTC rates the Men in Black as High threat, with the important qualification that the nature of the threat is not primarily physical. Documented MIB encounters involving direct violence are extremely rare — the risk profile here is psychological compliance, information suppression, and what our legal team describes in their notes as ‘coercion achieved through technically deniable means.’ Witnesses who engage cooperatively with MIB visitors tend to report outcomes ranging from the merely unsettling to the professionally and personally disruptive. Witnesses who attempt non-compliance report outcomes that are difficult to document precisely because the witnesses subsequently become difficult to reach.
If you believe you have been visited by or are about to be visited by MIB entities, WTC recommends the following: do not invite them into your home (they do not appear to require an invitation, but the threshold appears to matter to them in ways not yet understood); do not surrender original documentation or recording media without retaining copies stored at a separate location unknown to the visitors; note the vehicle registration, physical descriptions, and any credential details shown, and transmit this information to a trusted contact before engaging further. Do not accept beverages or food items if offered, though as noted elsewhere in this entry, the offer has not been documented. WTC acknowledges that this advice is almost certainly less comprehensive than the situation warrants.
WTC Field Notes
WTC has maintained an active MIB research file since the network’s founding, and that file has been reformatted, relocated, password-protected, accidentally deleted, and restored from backup a combined seventeen times — a frequency our IT coordinator describes as ‘statistically anomalous for a file of its size.’ The current version of the file is stored on a server physically located in a building our editor-in-chief has described, accurately, as ‘not the one you’d think.’ We do not elaborate on this for reasons that will be apparent to anyone who has read this entry carefully.
Two WTC field researchers assigned to MIB investigation have, in the past four years, requested permanent reassignment to other cryptid portfolios: one citing ‘a growing feeling of being observed,’ the other citing ‘a conversation I would prefer not to describe in writing.’ Both requests were granted. Their replacements were briefed using a version of this file that is, for their own comfort, somewhat shorter than what you are currently reading. We note that the MIB entry consistently receives the most submitted reader sightings of any entity in the database, and also the most subsequent retractions, which our editor has instructed us to record without further comment, and so we have.
