Overview
Slender Man is a tall, thin humanoid entity of indeterminate origin, distinguished by an absence of facial features, an unusual limb-to-torso ratio, and a consistent preference for formal business attire. Observed height ranges from 6’2″ to approximately 14–15 feet depending on witness account and apparent environmental conditions, a discrepancy WTC researchers have categorised as ‘unresolved but consistent with other documented anomalies.’ The entity has been linked to cases of stalking, psychological deterioration in witnesses, unexplained disappearances, and a documented psychiatric phenomenon — Slender Man Psychosis — that has been formally described in peer-reviewed literature, which is a level of academic acknowledgement most WTC subjects have not achieved.
The entity operates globally, with no confirmed geographic range, no identified territory, and no documented den, nest, roost, or home address. It appears to select individual targets — predominantly children and adolescents, though adult cases are on record — and engages in a sustained surveillance behaviour prior to any direct interaction. This period, referred to in the field as ‘proximate observation’ or, in less formal WTC communications, as ‘the part before the part,’ can last days, weeks, or months. Witnesses consistently report becoming aware of the entity only after it has been present for some time.
WTC classifies Slender Man as a Spirit-type entity on the basis that it demonstrates no consistent physical mass, appears to violate standard spatial geometry, and has been captured in photographs that post-date the camera’s confirmed malfunction. The classification is contested internally. The debate has been ongoing since 2012 and has not been scheduled for formal resolution.
History & Mythology
The earliest documented Western European folkloric analogue appears in German oral tradition, where accounts of a figure referred to as ‘Der Großmann’ — the Tall Man — describe a forest-dwelling entity that preyed on children who entered the woods at night. A 1702 woodcut attributed to Hans Freckenberg, a Bavarian woodcarver whose other surviving works are entirely pastoral, depicts a stretched, featureless figure standing at the treeline while a child in a nightgown walks toward it. The child appears unconcerned. Freckenberg made no other works featuring the figure, and no personal correspondence survives to indicate why he made this one.
The modern iteration of Slender Man emerged publicly in June 2009, when a user operating under the name ‘Victor Surge’ submitted two digitally manipulated photographs to the Something Awful internet forum as entries in a paranormal image editing contest. The photographs showed a thin, suited figure with no discernible face standing in the background of what appeared to be ordinary outdoor gatherings. The images spread rapidly. Within months, independent accounts of sightings that predated the forum post began to surface — accounts that described, with considerable consistency, an entity matching the photographs’ description. WTC’s position on the chronological relationship between the 2009 images and the pre-existing accounts is that it raises questions the network has tabled for a later meeting.
Between 2009 and 2014, Slender Man accumulated a documented cultural and evidentiary footprint that outpaced most cryptids with century-long records. In May 2014, two twelve-year-old girls in Waukesha, Wisconsin, stabbed a classmate nineteen times, later telling investigators they had done so to appease Slender Man. The victim survived. The case resulted in multiple criminal proceedings and a formal psychological assessment of Slender Man as a cultural transmission phenomenon. WTC notes, without further comment, that the psychological literature carefully avoids taking a position on whether the entity itself exists.
Physical Description
Slender Man presents as an extremely tall, thin humanoid — consistently described as appearing male, though no anatomical basis for this assessment has been confirmed. Height estimates across documented sightings average 9.3 feet in outdoor settings, though the figure has been observed in enclosed spaces — hallways, school corridors, the edge of a car park — at heights that should have made physical entry impossible. The limbs are disproportionately long relative to the torso, with arms reported to extend well below the knee line at rest. Some witnesses have described additional appendages — tentacle-like protrusions from the upper back or shoulders — though this feature is not consistent across all accounts and may represent a regional variant, a developmental stage, or individual witness variation.
The face is entirely absent. This is the entity’s most consistently documented feature across all geographic sightings, all time periods, and all media. There is no nose, no mouth, no eyes. The skin of the head is described as pale and smooth. The entity does not appear to require any of the organs this would normally imply the absence of. It wears what is described uniformly as a dark suit — black or deep charcoal — with a white dress shirt and, in approximately 60% of sightings, a tie. No sighting on record has described the entity in casual clothing, outdoor gear, or period dress. WTC’s consulting historian noted this with what she described as ‘professional unease.’
Skin colouration is uniformly pale to white, sometimes described as grey under low-light conditions. Fingers are elongated, typically described as having between four and six joints. The entity casts a shadow inconsistently — present in some documented photographs, absent in others taken under comparable lighting conditions. WTC’s photography consultant reviewed eleven confirmed images and described the shadow discrepancy as ‘not something I want to think about more than I have to.’
Behaviour & Temperament
Slender Man’s primary documented behaviour is sustained, patient observation. The entity does not appear to be hurried. Witnesses who have identified themselves as targets describe a progressive awareness — a figure seen once at distance, then seen again closer, then found to have been visible in the background of photographs taken before the witness was consciously aware of being followed. This escalation pattern has been documented across independent accounts in multiple countries with sufficient consistency that WTC researchers have assigned it a stage model, though the team member who named the stages ‘Noticing,’ ‘Being Noticed,’ and ‘The Remaining Stages’ has been asked to revise the nomenclature.
The entity demonstrates no documented territorial aggression toward non-targets. Individuals who encounter Slender Man incidentally — witnesses who observe the entity while it is apparently focused on someone else — typically report only visual contact, mild dissociation, and extended periods of insomnia. This suggests a degree of selective attention that WTC considers, professionally speaking, somewhat worse than indiscriminate aggression would be. The entity has not been documented to retreat, flee, or appear startled. Witnesses who have moved toward it describe it as having been further away than it appeared when they arrived at the location where it was standing, which is a behaviour WTC’s spatial geometry consultant described as ‘consistent with what I’d expect, unfortunately.’
Exposure to the entity is associated with a cluster of symptoms referred to in psychological literature as ‘Slender Sickness’: persistent nosebleeds, visual disturbances, coughing, memory gaps, and paranoid ideation. These symptoms have been observed in witnesses who report sustained contact and, in several documented cases, in researchers who have spent extended time reviewing collected materials. WTC has made the relevant occupational health disclosure to staff. Three researchers have requested reassignment.
Habitat & Territory
Slender Man demonstrates a documented preference for transitional spaces — areas at the edge of things. Treelines, the margins of car parks, the far end of corridors, the background of school photographs. The entity is reliably reported at the boundary between populated areas and the spaces beyond them, which WTC’s environmental profiler notes is either deeply significant or an efficient strategy for avoiding direct engagement with large numbers of people at once. Both interpretations lead to the same operational recommendation, which is to pay attention to treelines.
No consistent elevation preference has been established, and no terrain type has been documented as outside the entity’s operational range. Slender Man has been reported in dense forest, suburban environments, industrial districts, and, in two accounts, hospital corridors. It does not appear to require shelter, concealment, or any particular environmental condition. It has been reported in daylight. This detail is noted here without elaboration because no elaboration WTC has drafted has improved upon simply stating it.
Diet & Hunting
No feeding behaviour has been directly documented. The entity has not been observed consuming food, water, or any organic material. No prey remains, disturbed carcasses, or consumption evidence have been recovered from locations of confirmed Slender Man activity, and no biological requirement for sustenance has been established. WTC’s consulting biologist reviewed the available evidence and noted that an apex entity with no documented metabolic requirements represents either a significant gap in current field data or ‘something I would prefer to be a gap in current field data.’
The entity’s relationship to the individuals it targets — particularly those who disappear following confirmed sightings — does not yield clear dietary conclusions. Missing persons cases associated with Slender Man sightings show no consistent physical evidence at the point of disappearance, and in cases where the individual was subsequently located, no physical harm attributable to the entity has been confirmed. What the entity requires from its targets, if anything, remains undocumented. WTC has assigned this question a research priority rating of High and a research progress rating of None.
Notable Sightings
A group of six hikers reported a tall, thin figure standing motionless at the treeline approximately 80 yards from the main trail at 6:47 PM in late October. The figure was visible for an estimated eleven minutes before the group decided to leave the area. One member of the group, identified in WTC records as D. Carver, 34, remained facing the treeline while the others moved toward the trailhead, later describing the entity as ‘getting closer without moving.’ Carver’s position when the group returned was 23 yards closer to the treeline than where they had left him. He did not recall moving. All six hikers filed accounts with WTC within the same week, none of which they appear to have coordinated, and which agreed on all significant details.
In the weeks preceding the May 2014 Waukesha stabbing incident, both girls involved had independently reported to classmates that they had seen a tall, thin figure near the school building after hours. One had drawn what she described as ‘the man I’ve been seeing’ in a school notebook — a figure matching the documented description, with elongated limbs, a blank face, and a dark suit. The notebook was entered into evidence during legal proceedings. The presiding judge requested that it be kept in a sealed container between court sessions, for reasons described in the official record as ‘administrative.’
A dog walker identified as R. Holloway reported a tall figure standing between two trees approximately 40 meters from the path at approximately 7:15 AM. Holloway described the figure as wearing a dark suit, having no visible face, and being ‘at least twice my height,’ which Holloway estimated at 8-9 feet given the surrounding tree scale. The dog, a four-year-old Labrador named Biscuit with no documented prior anxiety, refused to proceed toward the figure and had to be physically relocated back toward the car park. Holloway submitted a written account to WTC three days after the incident and noted in the covering letter that Biscuit had not eaten normally since.
A forest patrol worker conducting a routine welfare check in the Aokigahara area reported a figure at an estimated distance of 60 meters that did not respond to verbal hailing and appeared, over approximately four minutes of observation, to remain completely still. The patrol worker, a twelve-year veteran of the route, described the figure as too tall to be a person standing normally, too thin to be a person standing at an angle, and too clearly present to be a tree. The patrol worker returned to the access road, filed a full written incident report with the relevant municipal authority, and submitted a parallel account to WTC. The municipal authority’s report categorised the incident as an ‘unidentified static obstruction.’ The patrol worker transferred to a different route the following month and did not request a transfer back.
Threat Assessment
WTC assigns Slender Man a threat rating of High on the basis of documented associations with psychological deterioration, disappearances, and at least one violent incident in which the entity was cited as a motivating factor by the perpetrators. Individuals who believe they are being targeted by the entity are advised to contact WTC’s reporting line and, separately, a qualified mental health professional — not because the two responses are mutually exclusive, but because both are operationally useful and the second is faster to arrange.
Field guidance from WTC’s threat assessment team recommends maintaining a minimum of 100 meters distance from any observed figure matching the described appearance, avoiding prolonged direct visual contact, and not approaching treelines in low-light conditions alone. If the figure appears to be moving closer without visible movement, WTC recommends relocating immediately rather than remaining to confirm the observation. It should be noted that WTC’s threat assessment team acknowledges the limits of this guidance, specifically that the entity has been documented in hospital corridors, which are not environments where a 100-meter buffer is architecturally achievable, and that no documented evasion strategy has been confirmed as effective. The guidance is offered as a starting point.
WTC Field Notes
WTC began formal research into Slender Man in 2013, at which point the entity already had a more extensive documented case file than most subjects in our database with fifty-year research histories. This was not considered a point in anyone’s favour. The research team assigned to the subject has experienced an above-average rate of reassignment requests, two extended medical leaves, and one resignation that the departing researcher described in their exit interview as ‘not specifically related to the Slender Man files but not unrelated either.’ WTC HR has asked us to note that the entity is classified as an environmental occupational hazard and that all staff working with related materials have access to the Employee Assistance Programme.
WTC attempted to deploy trail cameras at three confirmed sighting locations in 2018. Two cameras malfunctioned within 72 hours of deployment. The third returned 340 hours of usable footage showing nothing, and then malfunctioned. The footage was reviewed in full by one staff member, who noted in her review document that the footage showed nothing, and then added a second paragraph describing a figure visible in frames 12,847 through 12,851 that she had initially classified as a shadow. The review document was filed. The staff member is currently on extended leave. WTC has not reviewed the footage again, and has not formally decided whether it intends to.
