5 Things The Shadow People Did At The County Fair (Witnessed)

A single attendee filed the report. Sixty-four people were present. The kettle corn stand has not commented.

On Saturday, the Haverford County Fair opened its gates to the usual assortment of livestock competitions, funnel cake vendors, and — according to one formally submitted witness account now on file with the Department of Cryptid Affairs — a contingent of Shadow People. The report, submitted by a single attendee who has asked to be identified only as M. Calloway, describes five discrete incidents of Shadow People activity occurring across a six-hour window at the fairgrounds. The DCA has logged it as Case #4471-SC and assigned it a Moderate threat classification, which, I want to be clear, is the same classification they gave the Tallahassee Fog Incident of 2021, so we are not in uncharted territory here, but we are absolutely in territory that warrants a full accounting.

What makes the Haverford report unusual — beyond the obvious — is its specificity. M. Calloway did not submit a vague account of feeling watched or sensing an inexplicable chill near the prize pig enclosure. She submitted a numbered list. With timestamps. I have read a lot of cryptid witness reports in this job, and I will tell you that the numbered-list-with-timestamps format is either the sign of someone who has thought very carefully about credibility, or someone who has been thinking about this for a very long time and was simply waiting for an occasion that merited it. Based on the contents of item five, I am not prepared to rule out the second option. Sixty-four other fair attendees were present during at least one of the described incidents. Sixty-three of them have not filed reports. That is either evidence of collective denial or evidence that the funnel cake line was very long and people had priorities. Possibly both.

The Five Incidents, As Witnessed and Submitted

1

They Joined The Ride Queue (Twice)

M. Calloway reports that Shadow People — she uses the plural, and does not speculate on exact numbers, which I respect as a disciplined journalistic choice — joined the queue for the Tilt-A-Whirl at approximately 2:14 PM, and again for the Gravitron at 4:47 PM. In both instances, she reports they ‘stood in line in the usual way,’ which I find genuinely difficult to parse and have been thinking about since I first read this report at The Burrow on Tuesday morning. The queue-joining behavior was not aggressive, not disruptive, and resulted in no ride completion that she could confirm — by the time the line advanced to their position, they were, per M. Calloway, ‘no longer present in a way that required a ticket.’ The DCA notes this as ‘apparent compliance with queue social norms’ and has flagged it for further study. I flagged it in my green notebook and then transferred the note to my laptop folder, where it now lives alongside 846 other things I am getting to.

2

They Hovered Near The Kettle Corn Stand Without Purchasing Anything

This is the incident that has stayed with me most, professionally. M. Calloway clocked the hovering at around 3:00 PM and describes it as lasting ‘eleven to fifteen minutes, maybe longer, it was hard to keep track because I was also trying to enjoy my lemonade.’ The Shadow People did not approach the counter. They did not interact with the vendor or other customers. They simply hovered — her word, used three times in this section of the report alone — in the vicinity of the kettle corn stand, at a proximity she describes as ‘close enough that it felt intentional, but not close enough that you could say anything about it.’ The kettle corn vendor, a man named Dale Pursell who has been running this particular stand for eleven years, told the DCA that he ‘felt a little off’ that afternoon but attributed it to the heat. Dale has not been told about the report. I am not sure that changes anything, but I think about Dale sometimes.

3

One Of Them Won A Stuffed Animal

M. Calloway is careful here. She does not claim certainty. She writes: ‘I believe one of them may have participated in the ring toss game near the east fence, and I believe it may have won the large bear, because the large bear was gone after they left and the teenager running the booth looked confused in a specific way.’ The DCA has classified this as ‘unconfirmed but notable’ and noted that standard Shadow People behavioral profiles do not typically include carnival game participation or apparent interest in plush prizes. I would like to go on record as finding this detail wonderful. Not in a threat-minimizing way. In a ‘the universe continues to be more interesting than any of us are prepared for’ way. I mentioned it to Mr. Whiskers when I got home and he looked at me with what I can only describe as measured agreement.

4

They Attended The 4-H Livestock Judging

At approximately 5:30 PM, M. Calloway observed what she believes were two or three Shadow People standing at the rail of the livestock judging area during the goat portion of the 4-H competition. She describes them as ‘attentive.’ She notes that the goats did not react, which she found ‘either reassuring or more concerning, I went back and forth.’ The ribbon that year went to a Nubian doe named Clementine, owned by a thirteen-year-old named Becca Marsh, who was thrilled. The DCA has not contacted Becca Marsh. I have not contacted Becca Marsh. There is, at this stage, no reason to contact Becca Marsh. I’m just noting that Clementine won and that the Shadow People were there to see it, and that means something, even if I can’t tell you what yet.

5

The Mirror Tent Situation

M. Calloway’s fifth and final reported incident is described in its entirety as follows: ‘There was something that happened in the mirror tent at approximately 7:15 PM. I was there. They were there. I will not describe this in writing.’ She has initialed this section of the report, which I interpret as intentional. The DCA has logged it as ‘witness declines to elaborate — nature of incident unknown.’ They have assigned it a sub-classification of ‘Affectively Significant’ which is a category I was not previously aware existed and which I have now added to my notes in two separate locations to make sure I don’t lose it. I reached out to M. Calloway through the DCA intake form to ask if she would speak on background. She responded with a single line: ‘I would rather not revisit it, but I will say the mirrors were doing what mirrors do, and that was the problem.’ I have read that sentence approximately forty times. I will continue to read it. I do not think it will become clearer. I am submitting it to you as is, because that is what honest reporting looks like.

They stood in line in the usual way. By the time the line advanced to their position, they were no longer present in a way that required a ticket.

— M. Calloway, Witness, DCA Case #4471-SC

The DCA’s official statement on the Haverford case is, and I am quoting directly: ‘The Department acknowledges receipt of Case #4471-SC and is reviewing the account in accordance with standard Moderate-classification protocols. Attendees with additional information are encouraged to submit supplemental reports through official channels.’ Sixty-three additional attendees have not done so. I want to be careful about reading too much into that silence. People go to county fairs for a good time, and ‘good time’ and ‘filing a cryptid witness report’ are not categories most people are managing simultaneously. But sixty-four people were at the Gravitron queue. Sixty-four people were in the vicinity of the kettle corn stand between 2:45 and 3:30 PM. Sixty-four people had access to the mirror tent. One of them wrote it down. I am not saying the others were wrong not to. I am saying M. Calloway did, and we have a responsibility to take her at her word and do something rigorous with it.

⚠️

FIELD ALERT

If you attended the Haverford County Fair on the date in question and have information regarding any of the five reported incidents — including, and especially, the mirror tent — the DCA intake form is linked in the WTC resource index. You do not have to describe it in detail if you would prefer not to. M. Calloway has established that precedent and the DCA has accepted it. You can simply say it happened. That counts.

FAST FACTS

• Case Number: DCA #4471-SC — Haverford County Fair, Shadow People Activity
• Threat Classification: MODERATE
• Witnesses Present: 64 | Formal Reports Submitted: 1
• Incidents Logged: 5 (queue-joining ×2, kettle corn hovering, possible ring toss win, livestock judging attendance, mirror tent situation)
• Mirror Tent Situation Status: Witness declines to elaborate. DCA classification: Affectively Significant.
• Kettle Corn Vendor Status: Doing okay. Attributed it to the heat.

I felt a little off that afternoon. But it was hot. You know how it gets.

— Dale Pursell, Kettle Corn Vendor, Haverford County Fair

The thing about this report — the thing I keep coming back to, the thing I mentioned to my dad when he called to tell me about his latest Skinwalker Ranch episode — is that none of the five incidents involved harm. None of them involved escalation. The Shadow People queued. They observed the goats. One of them may have come away with a large stuffed bear. They stood near the kettle corn for eleven to fifteen minutes, maybe longer, and did not purchase anything, which is behavior I have personally engaged in at that exact type of stand while trying to decide if I actually wanted kettle corn or if I just wanted to want kettle corn. I am not saying this makes them harmless. The mirror tent situation exists, and M. Calloway’s refusal to describe it is, in my assessment, the most chilling line in a document that already contains the phrase ‘no longer present in a way that required a ticket.’ I am saying that whatever they were doing at the Haverford County Fair, they were doing it alongside sixty-four other people, in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, near a 4-H competition and a ring toss game. They were there. We were there. That is the part of this job that I find I can’t stop turning over, even after I’ve closed my green notebook and fed Mr. Whiskers and called it a night.
